The Pajero now sports some bigger and fancier rear speakers. Sound is much improved, and these actually have a bit of bass to them unlike the 4 small speakers up front.

Replacing the speakers to go along with the new head unit was a bit of scope creep, but maybe not as much as the next project (it now sports more antenna mounts than it left the factory with). Overall sound is much improved, and it received an FM band that is broadcast on this side of the world, plays digital media, streams and does phone stuff over by, and otherwise does the modern audio things. The system doesn’t play quite as loud as I would’ve expected before distortion kicks in from the 4" like speakers, but smaller, up front. It sounds fantastic up to that point. For less than $400, this will do nicely in an old adventure mobile.

At first, I was like, “There’s no way those sound better than the Meridians in your XE.”

But then I saw Pajero, and my fears were assuaged.

Looking good! W hat’s your antennae setup to grab radio from so far away?

By the time you’re done your Pajero is going to to be the best in the western hemisphere.

I’m filling the second din slot under the radio with a CB. It seems appropriate for the radio guy to actually have a radio on my own truck.

I only got as far as the antenna mount and routing to cable towards the dash tonight.

Those in no way sound better than the Meridi ans in the Jag, even if mine only has the baby 380w system.

Are the speakers actually causing distortion, or is the head unit clipping the signal? I'll guess the latter.

Good question, l assume the later thinking about it.  Any idea on why that would happen?

From what I remember it’s caused by the amplifier driving the speakers not having enough power, so as you dial up the volume the mean output power exceeds the amp’s capacity and it starts to clip the wave form, which the speaker then follows . Most head units have a clipping point, and sometimes external amps do so as well. The trick is to match that clipping point to the speaker cone's maximum extension.

I’ve been toying with mounting a CB in mine but there is so little traffic on those bands now. I’ve got a sweet looking old GE CB if you want it, been hanging onto it not sure what to do with it since it looks too cool to c huck in the ewaste pile.

That is cool. My new CB came today, but I would totally hang on to that one in your shoes, too.

I’m curious how much traffic I might hear. I like the idea of being able to listen in to the NOAA weather bands at will. I suppose I could always ask for a smokey check out on the interstates, although going fast enough to get pulled over in Pajero on 75mpg interstates in a state where less 10 over is unlikely to be noticed would be a feat in an of itself. That would have to be either a really steep downgrade, and/or  a ticket worthy of being framed.

The meridien sound system in JLR products is fantastic. Almost comparable to the Mark Levinson in my Lexus.

Those Kenwood KFC speakers will really open up with a dedicated amplifier. I have some in my truck that I had powered from the head unit before I eventually got a JL sub enclosure to replace the center seat. I opted for a 5 channel amp instead of just a mono amp for the subwoofer. It cost a fair amount more but the boost in sound quality was fantastic.
